iPad – Flashy, Yet No Flash.

I am going to throw in my 2 cents on the iPad. Why not, everybody else seems to have an opinion on it.

I will start by saying that, like most Apple products, the iPad looks shinny and fun. It seems easy to use and the screen/resolution looks amazing. I would love to own an iPad purely for portfolio presentations. I’d probably buy a few to circulate around town to perspective clients. In this capacity, I think it would be unparalleled. That is where I see it fitting into my little stable of electronic tools anyway. Where I see the epic failure, and the ultimate reason I wont support Apple on this product, is lack of support for Flash. Apple promotes the iPad as the ultimate web viewing experience. I think that is a stretch (more like a big iPhone) but I can see how it would be fun. That being said, Flash is part of the web, a big part of it in fact. I understand that flash is very limiting for some viewers which is why my corporate site and blog were designed without it. I wanted those sites to be easily accessible on all devices, but when it came to my photography site there was no question it was going to be Flash based. If the iPad is supposed to be the ultimate web viewing experience and it’s users can’t view my website, how can I support that product. I can’t, and I won’t.

I do own an iPhone and I love it. It’s hands down the best PDA out there. I can still carry all my photos and videos on it. I even carry VGA cables to present to clients on a big screen. Two of my three sites look amazing on it and, like the iPad, my only real beef with it is lack of Flash capability. It’s primary use for me was a phone so I was able to justify it despite this issue.

Apple says the main reason they do not support Flash is their desire to maintain performance. I think it has more to do with Apple not being happy that so much web content, especially video and games, runs on a proprietary technology from Adobe.

So that is my 2 cents on it. Apple, if you want my money you’re going to have to play ball. No Flash, no cash.
