Today I had the pleasure of shooting at Joyride 150, an indoor bike park in Markham, Ontario. I have been hearing a lot about the park but have not had the pleasure of shooting there until today. I have asked, and have been asked by, several riders to shoot there leading up to today. One of those riders was Rob Fraser. Rob’s a good guy so I agreed to head out and snap some shots for him.
Shooting indoors with mixed light is always challenging. I “could” have got away with available light but my test shots looked pretty flat. I knew the key for using artificial light would be to balance the different light sources. I recently picked up a set of Honl gels to retrofit on my SB-800(s) for these very situations. They worked like a charm and I was able to have consistent colour temperature throughout the back section of the park. The other challenges would be dealing with contrasty shadows and isolating my subjects from the busy backgrounds.
I got off to a good start shooting with Rob when a young fellow came over to introduce himself to me. It was Brett Rheeder, a young rider I had made contact with about shooting a few months ago. Brett was down with some shooting and jumped right in the mix. The kid is amazing! He has a great attitude and killer style. Hope we can keep this one in Ontario! Brett and Rob rode great and things went pretty smoothly on my end. I will be shooting some features for the park so today was just a little warm up. I was super impressed with the facilities. The staff were very professional and accommodating. The park even has free wi-fi. I am really looking forward to getting back with all the camera goodies. Here are some of the keepers from today’s shoot. Enjoy.
Thanks to Rob, Brett, Ori and all the staff at Joyride for the fun day shooting. Looking forward to the next one!
